A 12-year-old St Colm’s High School pupil is one of the stars of a new movie that could scoop an Oscar at February’s glittering Los Angeles ceremony.

The spotlight first shone on Aaron Lynch from Poleglass when he starred in this year’s hit movie ’71 – the poster for the movie featured a still of him being chased by a British soldier.

He’s now starring in Boogaloo and Graham, shortlisted in the Live Action Short Film category, which was won by West Belfast film maker Terry George in 2012 for his film The Shore.

Directed by Michael Lennox, Boogaloo and Graham, set in 1970s Belfast, tells the story of two young boys who discover tough life lessons – with the help of their pet chickens.

Speaking to the Ander-sonstown News, Aaron’s proud mum Colette said the family were unaware of the Oscar nod for Boogaloo and Graham until a family friend rang with the exciting news on Saturday morning.

Proud

“It really is all go for Aaron at the minute following the success of ’71,” she said. “We are all so proud of him and all he has achieved so far. He loves to act and dance and he’s only 12 – it’s a fantastic accomplishment.”

Aaron explained the plot behind the “very funny” movie. “Our dad comes home with two chickens as the family can’t really afford a family pet and we try to protect them. The film was shot during the summer so I didn’t need a note from school,” he said.

Aaron’s flair for drama saw him land the lead role of the Artful Dodger in the St Kieran’s production of Oliver! And his talent also led to a year’s scholarship with the Lyric Theatre.

“It’s really exciting about the Oscars,” said Aaron, “it’s brilliant and amazing.”

Colette said the makers of the Oscar-nominated short are hoping to have a screening party before it goes on release for the boys. “There is also talk of it being nominated at the Baftas, it’s brilliant news for Aaron and the family and we are very proud.”
