Ardoyne expected a tough game on Saturday against a Newhill team who have only lost one game this season. But Ardoyne were well up for the game and came flying out of the blocks with Donal Palmer releasing strike partner Gerard Patterson who tapped home at the far post.

Ardoyne went on to increase their lead with two more goals with G Patterson scoring his second with a fine finish, then from a corner Blaine Keenan jumped highest to smash a header into the top corner.

The Ardoyne back line of Aaron Stewart, B Davidson, T Moloney, D O’Hare and J Doherty were solid at the back while the midfield of S Doyle, B Keenan, G McGuire and M McGuire controlled the midfield. Forwards D Palmer and G Patterson were a constant goal threat and it wasn’t long before Ardoyne increased their lead when Matthew McGuire volleyed home from inside the box. Moments later Gerard Patterson smashed in a free-kick to complete his hat-trick and give Ardoyne a 5-0 lead.

With the half-time whistle approaching Newhill scored a great free-kick to leave the score 5-1 at the interval.

It was Newhill who opened the scoring in the second half with another free-kick from outside the box.
