Carnmoney knew that this would be a really tough challenge as their first match would be up against last year’s league champions. The game began brightly but it was Whitehead who had the best of the early chances but could not beat the in form McFarlane in the Carnmoney goal.

But the Colts settled down and started passing the ball smoothly, and Carson soon put the Colts in front when he blasted home after McCoubrey’s clever pass.

This seemed to settle Carnmoney’s nerves and they continued to pressure the Whitehead defence with Press and Bainbridge both seeing good shots go narrowly wide.

But Whitehead responded well and only some great defensive work from Totten and Goodyear prevented them from getting an equaliser.

The second half saw a good spell for Whitehead which saw them equalise. But Carnmoney did not let their heads drop and fought on with great determination and spirit.

McGuinness and Burns were influential in feeding wingers Bainbridge and Carruthers down both flanks, who tormented the Whitehead defence from which they won several corners.  Knox came close when his header went just wide, and the Whitehead keeper did well to keep numerous other efforts out of the net.

Carruthers finally made it 2-1 when he placed the ball into the bottom corner. Carnmoney’s confidence was soaring and their pressure paid off when McCoubrey coolly fired home from eight yards.

This ended a fantastic display from Carnmoney Colts and the management team would like to thank each of the players for a superb performance.
