ORGANISERS of the under-threat 2014 Ardoyne Fleadh have said they are “amazed” at the level of support they have received since announcing a lack of funding for this year’s events.
Paul McCusker of the Ardoyne Fleadh Committee said that a notice on the Fleadh’s social networking sites that some events might have to be cancelled caused “uproar” from local people. The 24th annual Fleadh is expected to begin on Tuesday, August 19 with six days of community events finishing with three open air concert nights ending on August 24.
Supporters have now thrown their weight behind a new fundraising campaign called the Ardoyne Fleadh 100 challenge which will begin with a sponsored walk this weekend starting in Ardoyne and walking to the Cavehill.
“The response from local people has been amazing as they all know how important the Ardoyne Fleadh is to the area,” said Paul.
“This fundraising event is aimed at getting local people more involved in their community and to build on the community spirit in the run up to the Fleadh.”
The event starts at 12pm on Sunday, July 27 and participants will meet outside the Crumlin Star.
“The committee would like to personally thank everyone for getting involved and helping to ensure we can still continue to deliver all of the events this year.
“It's times like this that you can truly see the community uniting together and can feel a real sense of community spirit,” added Paul.
