Education Minister John O’Dowd this week put a spoke in the wheel of the Irish language revival when he blocked recognition of an Irish medium nursery school unit at Gaelscoil Éanna in Glengormley.

One of the most positive aspects of the emerging Belfast is the vitality of the GAA and of the Irish language. Those trends come together in this fine North Belfast school which is being pioneered by many of the same folk behind the meteoric rise of St Enda’s GAC.

We need to encourage the green shoots of change right across Belfast and nothing drives change quicker than An Ghaeilge… as the people of West Belfast have shown to the rest of the city and beyond.

This decision is wrong and short-sighted and it needs to be reversed as a matter of urgency.
