HEAD teacher-turned-artist Kay Cullen will be holding her eighth solo exhibition in Lisburn City Library during the month of February.
Titled ‘Come Away’, the exhibition is a collection of thirty paintings and drawings to celebrate 150 years since the birth of the poet WB Yeats.
Kay says in this body of work she wanted to combine her interest in painting with her love of poetry on what’s a landmark year in the history of Irish art.
“My husband encouraged me to paint and draw which I have always loved, so I organised solo exhibitions for charity,” she said. “This exhibition, my eighth, is to support children with life-limiting conditions in the Children's Hospice. My inspiration for the exhibition has come from the poetry of WB Yeats and the beautiful areas of Sligo and Galway he made his adopted home. Growing up I was also inspired by the beauty of the Mourne Mountains.”
Kay says that the wellbeing of children has always been at the forefront of her mind during her career.
“I've spent my life raising my two daughters and two sons and children's wellbeing and learning has been at the heart of everything I do. When I was teaching I wanted to show children that school and learning could be fun.”
Kay’s exhibition will be held from February 2 to 29 in Lisburn City Library, Linenhall Street, with the proceeds raised going to the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice.
