Springhill Community House has been a pioneer of Community Education in West Belfast since 1972.  Established by Fr Des Wilson (see documentary video below) in response to community need, the project has continued to encourage people to think for themselves, to have an opinion and to vocalise it.

Springhill Community House is about empowering people to take control of their own lives so that they can realise their full potential.  This has become more crucial during the current Covid-19 pandemic.

Springhill Community House have been supporting people at home during the lockdown by delivering food parcels (see pic, left), providing educational, social, health, environmental activities and talking therapies.

This year’s programme builds on this ethos and involves the delivery of  personal development, life coaching, education, training, health awareness and self-confidence programmes.

The programmes are both accredited and non-accredited and participants will gain widely recognised qualifications as well as soft outcomes which bring increased self-esteem, enabling participants to see a more positive future for themselves.

GCSE English, Maths and Science remain the most popular of the accredited courses as they are core subjects required by participants seeking job opportunities.

Our social inclusion courses such as Life-Coaching, Digital Photography and Women in Irish History are geared towards individuals who are not ready to undertake academic qualification, acting as a stepping stone into other courses. Throw Covid-19 into the mix and we have to do things differently. We have to restrict class sizes, so places are limited, and we have taken steps to ensure students will adhere to the PHA advice of social distancing and hand sanitising. For our GCSE classes we have been able to secure the use of Corpus Christi parish hall which will allow us more space to ensure social distancing.
