A 19-year-old from Ligoniel was treated for a stab wound to his back on Saturday in the most serious of a number of crimes reported over the twelfth weekend.
The teenager was rushed to hospital after he was attacked on the Mountainhill Road following an incident in the early hours of Saturday (July 12).
The man was injured at around 1.20am by two men who are believed to have made their getaway from the area in a silver Renault Clio in the direction of the city.
The injured party was treated for his wounds and later released.
His father told the North Belfast News that his son was “very shook up” but on the road to recovery. No motive has been disclosed and investigations are ongoing.
Later that evening a family living in Ballysillan had their front window smashed with a shovel in an unrelated attack. Police say the house at Rosscoole Park was targeted sometime after 3.15am and that the incident was being treated as a sectarian hate crime.
The previous night, in the Parkmount Street area of the Shore Road, three windows of a house were smashed by a number of men. This incident, that occurred around 4.30am, is also being investigated as a hate crime, but this time with a racial motive.
Meanwhile a 26-year-old man arrested on the Oldpark Road on the eleventh night is due to appear in court on August 8 charged with disorderly behaviour and possession of a class B controlled drug.
Elsewhere a memorial to three British soldiers killed in 1971 by the IRA was attacked on July 12. The monument, at White Brae, Ligoniel, has been repeatedly defaced since it was erected in 2009.
The defacement was condemned by all political parties, with Sinn Féin’s Gerry McCabe calling for anyone with information on those behind the incident to contact the police.
“Unfortunately this isn’t the first time this monument has been defaced.
“I condemn unreservedly those behind this attack, it is wrong.
“If anyone has any information on who is behind these wanton acts of vandalism then I urge them to immediately contact the PSNI.”
