A CONSORTIUM of leading Northern Ireland mental health charities has welcomed the UK Government's £343 million investment to establish nearly 200 new community mental health crisis services across England, describing it as a positive example of how sustained investment can transform access to mental health care.
The plans will see 100 new community mental health centres and 59 additional mental health emergency departments created by 2029, providing people experiencing a mental health crisis with accessible, specialist support closer to home.
The announcement also throws into sharp focus the situation in Northern Ireland, where the ten-year Mental Health Strategy (2021–2031) remains significantly underfunded despite widespread recognition of the need for reform.
Renée Quinn, Chief Executive Officer of PIPS Suicide Prevention Charity, said: "England's announcement shows what can be achieved when governments invest in mental health services and make crisis care a priority. People here deserve the same commitment.
"We have a Mental Health Strategy that sets out the right vision, but without sustained investment it cannot deliver the services people desperately need. Every day, we see individuals and families struggling to access timely support, often only receiving help when they have reached crisis point.
"Through our Too Many Lives Lost campaign, we are calling for urgent action to address the gaps in mental health provision in NI. We are urging the Executive to fully fund the Mental Health Strategy and deliver the services that people have repeatedly been promised, but not delivered.
"Northern Ireland's mental health needs are unique. Decades of conflict have left a legacy of trauma that continues to affect individuals, families, and communities today. Despite this, we continue to receive the lowest level of mental health funding per head of population in the UK while experiencing one of the highest suicide rates.
"That is not just a funding gap, it is a gap in opportunity, prevention, and hope. If we are serious about reducing suicide, we must invest in early intervention, community based mental health services and crisis support that people can access before they reach breaking point. Every life lost is one too many, and we cannot afford to wait any longer."
PIPS Charity along with its partners are calling on the Northern Ireland Executive to match the ambition shown elsewhere by investing in the mental health workforce and expanding community-based services that provide timely support before problems escalate.
Backed by a consortium of leading charities working across the mental health and suicide prevention sector, the TooMany Lives Lost campaign is calling for sustained investment in mental health services, the full implementation of the Mental Health Strategy, improved access to crisis support, and a renewed focus on prevention and early intervention.
