A WEST Belfast MLA has called for urgent action to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour and vandalism at Suffolk Shops, after a second fire was lit dangerously close to a resident’s oil tank.
Sinn Féin representatives have once again met with the Department for Communities and the PSNI to discuss the ongoing issues at Suffolk Shops.
West Belfast MLA Órlaithí Flynn said: “This anti-community behaviour must be stopped urgently. Fires are being started dangerously close to residents’ oil tanks and it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured if this behaviour continues.
“Following our meeting onsite, the Department for Communities has agreed to a number of potential solutions that could deter anti-social behaviour here including welding the gates shut and installing anti-climb measures above the gates.
“We will now be engaging with the local community to discuss the options available and ensure that their interests fully dictate what option is taken here.”
Councillor Siobhán McCallin added: “Residents aren’t feeling safe in their own homes and are living in constant fear that fires could set their oil tanks alight, causing serious damage and potentially life-threatening situations.
“People carrying out this damage must acknowledge the risk and harm they are causing to the area and stop as soon as possible.
“We will continue working with the Department for Communities, the police and all relevant agencies to ensure residents’ homes are protected and that this space is safe for the local community.”
Police have also said they will be monitoring the area more closely, particularly during the evenings when reports of anti-social behaviour increase.
