IMPROVEMENTS works at Falls Park will deliver a major boost to Newhill FC as the club continues its push towards intermediate status.
The project, which is currently underway, will see a number of long-awaited improvements made to the pitch and surrounding facilities.
The works totalling around £300,000 investment include, in this first phase, the installation of spectator fencing, ball-stop catch nets, new home and away team dugouts, changing facilities and hard-standing spectator pathways. The second phase, now agreed for later this year, will see the addition of new changing facilities closer to the pitch.
These improvements are needed to ensure that the ambitious club can reach intermediate status and build on their success so far.
Planning permission for the project was granted in January this year, with work getting underway in early August. The first phase of works are expected to be completed by early October, and the second phase of changing facilities will begin at a later point in the season.
The project forms part of wider efforts to improve grassroots sporting facilities across West Belfast and provide local clubs with safer, more modern facilities.
Councillor Micheal Donnelly welcomed the progress on the project, saying the works would provide a major benefit for Newhill FC and the wider community.
“It is great to see work now underway on the pitch ahead of the new season for Newhill FC and for everyone who uses Falls Park,” he said. “These improvements have been needed for a long time, and it is great to be delivering the facilities that local players, coaches and supporters deserve.
“Newhill FC do fantastic work within the local community, providing opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in football. Having safe, quality facilities is hugely important in supporting that work.
“As the club continues to target intermediate status, these improvements are needed to ensure the facilities at Falls Park are better equipped to meet the club’s needs now and into the future.”
Councillor Ronan McLaughlin said the project represented an important step forward for the facility and for football in the local area.
“This project has been a priority for some time, so it is fantastic to see work now taking place at Falls Park,” he added.
“The lack of appropriate fencing, catch nets, spectator pathways and proper shelter for players has created challenges over the years. These works will address those issues and make a noticeable difference on match days and during training.
“The new changing facilities later this year will help bring the facility up to a much better standard and provide a more welcoming and safer environment for players, coaches and spectators.
“Newhill FC is an important part of the local sporting community, and these improvements will support the club reach higher levels in local football."
