WHITEROCK Children's Centre have launched their annual Christmas appeal – the earliest yet as they aim to ease the burden on local families.

The appeal has been supporting local families since 2010 and last year the generosity of local people, organisations and businesses helped 800  people.

Sadly, that number is expected to rise this Christmas but the centre is determined to assist as many people in need as possible.

Centre Director Deirdre Walsh said: "It's that time of year again and due to the demand we're already seeing, we are launching our Christmas Appeal earlier than ever.

"Last year we supported around 800 individuals, from children to teenagers and families and we envisage even more this year so we need to be prepared early.

"As a small community organisation based in an area affected by significant deprivation, we see first hand the challenges many families face, especially during the festive season.

"Through our Family Support Hub we receive requests all year around for help with food and energy costs so we know the demand out there.

"No one wants to see a child go without at Christmas, yet for many families this is their reality.

"We are asking for your support to help us bring some Christmas magic, hope, and joy to local children and families. Every donation, no matter how small, will make a real difference.

"We have a fundraising page for money which enables us to buy things like food vouchers, gift vouchers and electronic equipment for older kids.

"It is easier for people to buy toys for younger kids but when it comes to teenagers in families, they are more expensive to buy for.

"We are asking for the usual donation of toys and gifts for children of all ages as well of course.

"I know the community will come together once again this Christmas. They know the area, the people and the need and they are always so generous every year. We receive support from wider afield and we will be relying on that support once again to take away the stress from families at Christmas time.

"The hard work starts now and hopefully we can get as much stuff in as possible."
