FIRST Minister Michelle O'Neill has received a letter from the PSNI inviting her to attend an interview in relation to protests on the Garvaghy Road.

On September 27 Garvaghy Road residents and supporters prevented an Orange Order march being forced past nationalist homes in Portadown after the parade was given the go ahead following a legal challenge failed to prevent an earlier Parades Commission decision. Nearly two weeks on and residents and supporters have kept a vigil preventing any parade from taking place.

On Saturday 15,000 people attended a rally on Garvaghy Road supporting the residents.

Yesterday, West Belfast People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll confirmed that he had received a letter inviting him to attend a police interview regarding protests against the Orange Order march. Sinn Féin also confirmed that several party members had also received letters from the PSNI.

This evening Sinn Féin Vice-President Michelle O'Neill said: "I can confirm I have received a letter inviting me for a police interview in relation to a peaceful protest on the Garvaghy Road.

"I will co-operate with the investigation.

"For the last two weeks, I have stood in solidarity with the Garvaghy Road residents as attempts were made to force an unwanted Orange march through their community.

"I will continue to stand with the Garvaghy Road residents who should be allowed to live in peace and free from sectarian intimidation.

"Because it is always right to stand up for what is right.

"And there can be no going back."
