ST Bernard's Primary School in Glengormley held a bun sale as part of an ongoing fundraising drive at the school.

The North Belfast school are taking part in the Cool FM/Downtown Radio 'Cash For Kids' school challenge. From September 28-October 23 the school is coming together as a school community for one month of fun, fundraising and with friendly competition, with the opportunity to win up to £5,000.

On Friday, the school held a massive bun sale, which was attended by the school community.

Christine McCusker, Secretary of Friends of St Bernards, said: "We are fundraising like crazy for four weeks competing alongside seven other schools across NI, and the school that raises the most wins a top-up share of £5,000, along with keeping every penny they have raised.

"We are doing this by having different events at school, the majority for the children.

"We are trying to get the local community behind us to ask for donations as a large part of winning this will be from the wider community.

"The bun sale was a great success. There were buns for everybody and we certainly weren’t disappointed.

"A massive thank you to all our amazing parents and families who took the time to bake or buy buns for the sale. Your generosity was incredible — and the buns were absolutely delicious.

She added: "A special thank you to Deputy Mayor Alison Bennington and Councillor Eamonn McLaughlin for dropping in.

"The best event by a mile has been Sponge The Teacher Fridays which all the children have loved. We have some children bringing in £10 each week which gets them 20 sponges! The support has been unreal but we still need help to get this over the line.

"I want to give a shout out to our principal, Mr Kavanagh for fully getting behind the PTA this year and letting us take over his school for four weeks. It's been madness but he has been nothing but supportive.

"We have raised just over £5,000 in two weeks but our target is £20,000. We are fundraising for bike shelters to encourage children to cycle to and from school, a
school minibus to support educational activities, trips and extracurricular opportunities, new sports kits and equipment, digital learning programmes and technology devices, outdoor learning resources and additional educational resources and programmes."
