SUICIDE Awareness and Support Group in West Belfast have launched a new campaign focused on positive mental health coming into the winter months.

#MovingMindsTogether was launched at Belfast City Hall on Thursday to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day.

The campaign runs for 31 days until World Mental Health Day on October 10 and is all about encouraging people to get physically and socially active during that time.

Speaking at the launch in the Lord Mayor's Parlour, Conor Doran from SASG, said: "We are launching this new campaign on World Suicide Prevention Day which is in reality every day for us.

"This campaign is a preventative measure. It runs between now and World Mental Health Day on October 10. The aim is to encourage people to get socially and physically active during these 31 days and create those good habits and resilience coming into the darker days of the winter months.

"Getting physically and socially active is open to interpretation. People can do whatever suits them. It might be going to the gym, going for a walk, meeting a friend for a coffee or anything else.

"Even if you just spread the message of the campaign, that is absolutely fine also."

Debs Kelly added: "It is a hugely important campaign, especially coming into the winter months when the weather isn't as good and it gets darker earlier and people can feel a bit down or struggle to get motivated.

"Last year we started a fantastic partnership with All Saints College and some of the students there.

"We wanted to find out what young people are doing to keep physically and socially active and share what they do with others for an idea.

"It is a hugely positive campaign which we hope can make a huge difference."

Lord Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly said she was delighted to host the group for the launch of the campaign.

"I am proud to support this initiative from Suicide Awareness and Support Group who I have worked with since becoming a councillor.

"It is so important to show people that support is there and campaigns like this are vital for that.

"This campaign highlights what we can do every day to try and make sure we are in the best place possible.

"Mental health impacts us all and to be able to reach out and support others is so important.

"I am delighted to support this campaign launch in City Hall. This a building for everyone."

As part of the campaign, a walk will take place on Saturday at 12.30pm from Divis Flats to St James' Community Farm. Everyone is welcome to come along.
