FOLLOWING the acquisition of EUROSPAR Springfield Road and the subsequent internal refurbishment of the store, The Wall Group has announced the final phase of its £8 million investment programme at the Belfast site.

This final phase will create 40 new jobs and see the forecourt redeveloped with new pumps, a new EUROSPAR store façade and public realm works, creating a landmark development on one of the main arterial routes into Belfast.

The first phase of the investment was the acquisition of the business. The next phase delivered an internal refurbishment of the store. The final phase now focuses on the forecourt and external environment, completing the transformation of the site.

The Wall Group believes the investment can also play an important role in the wider regeneration of the Lower Springfield Road, demonstrating confidence in an area which has historically suffered from underinvestment and helping to attract further much-needed private investment.

The redevelopment will feature a bold new architectural design, dramatically transforming the appearance of the existing site and creating a modern retail destination for the local community.

The scheme will include a redeveloped GO forecourt, new fuel pumps, new tanks, a new canopy, a new EUROSPAR store façade, additional parking, improved customer circulation, enhanced pedestrian areas and public realm works that will significantly improve the overall appearance of the site.

A statement of confidence in the area

Gavan Wall of The Wall Group said: “When we acquired EUROSPAR Springfield Road a year ago, we saw enormous potential not just in the business itself, but in what this site could become and the contribution it could make to the wider Lower Springfield Road.

“One year on, we are delighted to announce the final phase of our £8 million investment programme. This work will completely redevelop the forecourt and external environment and create what we believe will be one of the most distinctive neighbourhood retail developments in Belfast.

“We deliberately wanted the architecture to be bold. This is a prominent site and we want the finished development to make a statement about our confidence in this community and in the future of the Lower Springfield Road.

“For too long, this part of Belfast has not attracted the level of private investment that it deserves. We hope that by making a substantial investment ourselves, improving the streetscape and creating 40 new jobs, we can demonstrate what is possible and encourage other businesses and investors to look again at the opportunities that exist here.”

The final phase follows The Wall Group’s acquisition of the Springfield Road business and the subsequent internal refurbishment of the store. Together, the three phases form an £8 million investment programme for the site.

The company says its objective is to combine the convenience of a modern forecourt with a significantly enhanced supermarket offering, providing the surrounding community with greater choice across fresh food, grocery, food-to-go and everyday essentials.

The redevelopment has also been designed with the wider streetscape in mind. The distinctive new EUROSPAR façade, new pumps, upgraded forecourt and public realm works will create a significantly enhanced gateway into the Lower Springfield Road.

Investment as a catalyst

Gavan Wall added: “This isn’t simply an investment in a shop and forecourt. It’s the final phase of our £8 million investment programme and an investment in the area.
“We employ local people, we serve local families and we want to build something the community can be proud of. We hope this development can become a catalyst for further investment along the Lower Springfield Road and contribute to the continued regeneration of this part of Belfast.”

Wider regeneration

Mr Wall said: “We have extensive experience of making bold statements through our investments in communities that are too often overlooked in North and West Belfast. A great example is our GO Filling Station on the Crumlin Road, beside Crumlin Road Gaol, where we made a major investment because we believed in the area and the people who live there.

“Every time we have gone bigger and better, the local community has given it right back to us in spades. They support the businesses, the businesses grow, more people are employed in good-quality jobs and, importantly, other investors begin to take notice and invest too.

“That is how areas which have suffered from a lack of investment begin to transform. One investment creates confidence for the next.

“That is what we work so hard for at The Wall Group. Of course we want to build successful businesses, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing our investment become a catalyst for wider regeneration and watching an area begin to fulfil its potential.

“That is exactly what we want to achieve on the Lower Springfield Road. We want this £8 million investment programme to make a bold statement about what is possible here and, hopefully, encourage others to follow.”

Work on the redevelopment will commence in September 2026 and is expected to complete in May 2027.

The store will remain open throughout the redevelopment, with The Wall Group seeking to minimise disruption to customers and neighbouring businesses throughout construction.
