BELFAST is to submit a bid to bring Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann back to the city for a third year in a row in 2028.

The city hosted the event for the first time this year and will host it again in 2027.

At Belfast City Council's full monthly meeting on Monday night a Committee's decision to submit a bid was approved.

In October, the Strategic Policy and Resources Committee approved a number of Fleadh-related measures including agreeing that the Council’s bid application for Fleadh Cheoil 2028 be progressed.

The Committee minutes were passed without any objections raised.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey said: “Tonight’s decision is great news for Belfast and an important step towards bringing the Fleadh back in 2028.

“The last Fleadh was truly extraordinary, with 1.6 million people coming to our city to enjoy the biggest Fleadh in history. It was a transformative moment for Belfast, bringing communities together and delivering a huge boost for local businesses.

“The bid is now officially underway. Let’s get behind it and work together to make 2028 another historic year for Belfast.”
