A LOCAL councillor says someone could have been seriously injured after anti-social behaviour in the Lower Falls at the weekend.
Independent councillor Paul Doherty shared footage of a group of up to 30 youths moving through the area and throwing fireworks on Saturday night. He is also urging parents to be aware of their children’s whereabouts.
Posting on social media, he said: "I’ve been speaking with residents in the Lower Falls who are deeply frustrated and worried by a group of up to 30 youths moving through the area and throwing fireworks."
"This cannot be allowed to continue. Someone could be seriously injured, and I am seeking an urgent response from police tonight to get on top of the situation.
"Those involved need to show some respect for the families, older residents and everyone living here, and knock this on the head now. Parents – know where your children are!
"And anyone selling fireworks to children needs to have a good hard look at themselves.
"They are helping create a dangerous situation in our communities."
The PSNI said they had attended the scene but no youths were "located".
Chief Inspector Gibson said: “We’re thankful that no injuries were reported as a result of these reckless actions last night. The situation is continuing to be monitored, and a policing presence will remain within these areas.
“We will take appropriate action where offences are identified.
“We also understand the impact that the misuse of fireworks can have on local communities – and we are here to listen to those concerns, and take action.
“The misuse of fireworks by young people is not harmless fun. Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause serious injury, significant distress and damage to property.
“We would also urge parents and guardians to speak with young people about the potentially serious consequences of this behaviour."
