What was your first job? Lilliput Laundrette

What did your first job teach you? My first job was working in a laundrette, where I quickly learned the importance of meticulous attention to detail, patience, and a strong work ethic. These skills have seamlessly transferred to my role as a Nursery Assistant at Wheatfield Primary School, where I've proudly served for the past 30 years.

Family/Status: I am married to my loving and supportive husband Henry. My son Steven is my rock and has been since day one. I have five grandchildren who I am immensely proud of. I love you Brooke, Mason, Maddox, Mia and Zara.

Best advice you would give to someone thinking of a teaching career: Being a classroom assistant is not just a job, it's a calling. You need passion, patience and dedication. My first job in a laundrette taught me invaluable lessons about attention to detail, multitasking, and perseverance—skills that have served me well in the classroom. Understand that every child is unique. Take the time to know their individual needs, strengths, and challenges. Building strong relationships with your students and their families is key to creating a supportive and nurturing environment.

Joanne was raised in the vibrant community of Taughmonagh. She has a deep-rooted connection to the area, having attended Taughmonagh Primary School. The values and friendships she forged during those early years have greatly influenced her life. She is the proud mother of three wonderful sons: Graham, Andrew, and Steven. Each of them have taught her the true meaning of unconditional love and resilience.

With a career spanning decades as a Nursery Assistant at Wheatfield Primary School, she has dedicated her life to nurturing and guiding young minds. Her journey started in a laundrette where she learned valuable skills, such as attention to detail and multi-tasking, which she carries with her to this day. She is passionate about creating a supportive and enriching environment for children, ensuring they feel valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending quality time with her family, and diving into a good book. She believes in the power of community and the importance of lifelong learning. Her life's work and experiences have taught her that with patience, dedication and a positive attitude, we can make a difference in the world around us.
