What was your first job? Cashier in a Fuel Garage/Shop
What did your first job teach you? As I completed my GCSEs, I began work as a cashier in a busy fuel garage. Juggling my studies alongside a part-time job and a hectic sporting calendar taught me the merits of time management, as well as developing my interpersonal skills – finding ways to communicate and listen with customers.
Family/Status: Single, living at home alongside my three brothers and parents.
Best advice you would give to someone thinking of a teaching career: Every day is different and, even when it’s hard, you won’t realise the impact you make on the lives of young people. This makes the hard work worth it. Your interactions with your students both inside and outside the classroom can make a huge difference to your pupils' lives.
During her post-primary years at St Patrick's High School Keady, Emma was fortunate to have teachers who truly invested in her potential, especially those who encouraged her to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher. In Year 13, she had the privilege of participating in a project called School Aid Romania where she helped raise essential funds for those less fortunate in Romania and spent a week working on various projects there.
Emma graduated from St Mary's University College Belfast in 2021 with a Bachelor's degree in Education and Business Studies with Honours. That same year she secured her first teaching position at Edmund Rice College as a Business Teacher. She has since advanced to the role of Assistant Head of Careers. Throughout her journey, she has been supported by an incredible team dedicated to creating a positive and welcoming environment for both students and staff.
When the opportunity arose in 2024 to get involved with Project Zambia, she eagerly embraced it, knowing it would allow her to contribute to meaningful community development and make a positive impact on many lives. Emma is excited to return in June 2025 with pupils from Edmund Rice College
