Born in Samaritan Hospital on August 6th 1959 to May and George, John attended Harding Memorial Primary School and went to RBAI, but due to the Troubles transferred to Grosvenor High School. John loved school and played rugby and tennis but most of all he enjoyed Drama and appeared in various productions. He was also inspired by Sid Lirimer, a great teacher.

He went on to study History and Politics at QUB from 1978 to 1982 and eventually taught at BRA from 1985 to 1986 and then MCB 1986 until 2019 where he established MUN as a part of the school. Now retired, he loves teaching so much that he has subbed in many schools.
