A NEW Blackboard Award will be presented this year, designed to recognise and celebrate teachers, classroom assistants, principals, and support staff who embody the spirit that defined Mary Ann McCracken's life.
The Mary Ann McCracken Kindness and Leadership Award, supported by the Mary Ann McCracken Foundation, commemorates the life and legacy of Mary Ann McCracken (1770–1866), a remarkable philanthropist, advocate for the poor and tireless campaigner for justice.
This complements The Spirit of Mary Ann Award for young Key Stage Two pupils, also supported by the Mary Ann McCracken Foundation.
The Mary Ann McCracken Kindness and Leadership Award is for teachers, classroom assistants, principals, and support staff who show exceptional initiative or leadership in three key areas.
It recognises those who show compassion for others, demonstrating kindness, empathy and a willingness to help those in need. It also recognises those who demonstrate courage in action and stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult, and those who take the initiative to make a positive difference in their school community.
Paula Reynolds, CEO of Belfast Charitable Society, said that the award provides timely recognition of the hard work and dedication of teachers and support staff.
"We appreciate the work carried out in schools every day and recognise the tireless commitment of those who care for the whole child.
"More and more educators are acknowledging the importance of supporting children’s wider needs, alongside their academic development, just as Mary Ann herself did over 200 years ago. Whether social, health-related or economic, addressing these needs takes compassion, kindness and courage.
She continued: "At a time when school budgets are increasingly stretched, we want to recognise the enormous difference these individuals make to their school communities through this special Mary Ann McCracken Kindness and Leadership Award, as part of the prestigious Blackboard Awards.
"Whether a teacher, classroom assistant, principal or member of the school support staff, their contribution is invaluable, helping to ensure that every young person in their care has the best possible chance to thrive and succeed in life."
