A NEW mural has been painted on the International Wall on the Falls Road based on the ongoing resurfaced Drumcree dispute.

Painted by local artists Danny Devenny, Marty Lyons and Patsy McKee, the mural has been designed in support of Garvaghy Road residents and an unwanted Orange march.

The mural depicts a number of key messages including 'Re-route', 'No going back' and 'Marching back to the 19th century'.

There is also a poignant image of 21 crosses, representing the graves of 21 people who lost their lives during the previous Drumcree dispute in the late 1990s.

Speaking to the Andersonstown News as he put the finishing touch to the mural, Danny said: "Back in 1998, we were down on the Garvaghy Road doing murals with the kids to take their minds off things.

"People don’t realise about the anxiety in communities that are under siege from Orange marches.

"There are crosses to represent the graves of the 21 people lost their lives there during the last Drumcree dispute.

"There is a dove to represent the peace of the last 28 years and then we have the Orangemen who are re-routed.

"The question mark is one for the Parades Commission and why they approved an Orange march down the Garvaghy Road for the first time in 28 years and also a question for the Orange Order and why do they want to parade down a Catholic neighbourhood?

"I hope people see this mural and understand the issue. This wall is a space for us to reflect on issues that affect us and show solidarity with the people of the Garvaghy Road."
