CAREY

CAREY  Bernard (B.C) Died 26th October 2021. A tribute to the late Bernard Carey (BC) from one of his comrades. When Bernard died in October is wasn’t the right time to pay this tribute to Bernard. I knew Bernard from boyhood to manhood. He worked in Gillilands Shop, Falls Road from the age of 8 years old, he sang in Clonard Choir. Brother Augustine would say that Clonard had the 3 tenors. We used to wind him up about turning down the contract for recording his singing. His friend in the choir would have told him how silly he was for turning it down. Bernard was a private person. I asked him where all his medals went as he always came first at all the Feis from the early 50’s. His reply to me was, give my head peace. Another thing Bernard did was travel a good bit of the world and was extradited from Brixton Prison to Belfast, never to enter Britain again. Then he was shot by Cyprus Street but moved on with his life, a true republican till the end and never boasted about anything in life. he respected his friends. I could write a book about him but I’ll leave it for now as he will be looking down on me wanting to kill me. He respected all who he came across in life. My sympathy to his wife Teresa and family. From your Mo Chara.
