GLL, operating under the brand Better, is a social enterprise organisation which runs sport and leisure facilities, on behalf of local authorities across the UK.
With a focus on leisure facilities in Belfast, we are running a series of features looking at stories of members and how they got involved in their local leisure centre.
This week it is Orlagh McGleenan who got involved in the Active Belfast Move Forward programme by Better Gyms after receiving a devastating cancer diagnosis.
Active Belfast Move Forward is a free local physical activity referral programme designed to support people living with cancer and beyond.
The pathway offers participants rehabilitation and rehabilitation programmes delivered by specialist trained cancer physical activity coaches.
It aims to improve the physical activity levels and emotional wellbeing of participants at all stages of their cancer care journey.
Speaking to Belfast Media, Orlagh explained: "I was never a regular gym-goer. I was into running and liked to keep active.
"In January 2025, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I took part in a pre-habilitation programme and was told about Active Belfast Move Forward which is in conjunction with Better Gyms. I was given Marty McCartney's number who runs a series of classes for people who have been diagnosed with cancer to try and get them back to their pre-cancer shape.
"I went through chemotherapy and surgery. I got in touch with Marty and he invited me along to a 12-week trial programme. I started his classes in September 2025 and have been involved ever since.
"Every class there are eight different exercises to do with things like strength, cardiovascular and balance. Marty is extremely well informed about the different diagnosis of cancer that his clients have so every exercise is adapted for each person."
Orlagh says the benefits personally have been huge and is encouraging others who may be in her position to get involved.
"For me, it has been phenomenal. We all know the physical, mental and emotional benefits of physical exercise," she added.
"Going through a cancer diagnosis, you can feel everything spiral out of control but this programme gives you that little bit of control back. It has restored my confidence in my body.
"There is real sense of community. It is all people who have been through a cancer diagnosis but we don't talk about that. It is a non-judgemental space. It is very welcoming and inclusive.
"I feel fitter and stronger. In March, I completed a ten-mile run in Derry and I wouldn't have been able to do that without Marty and his classes.
"For anyone who is in a similar situation as myself, I cannot recommend the Active Belfast Move Forward programme enough. Don't be afraid and speak to Marty who will take you along every step of the way.
"I am now a full member of Better Gyms, or any gym for that matter for the first time in my life. The people, the staff are so friendly and I no longer feel intimidated coming to a setting like this."
