TRIBUTES have been paid to West Belfast man Denis Boyle, described as a "stalwart" of the O'Donovan Rossa club, following his passing aged 91.
Denis had been involved with Rossa for over seven decades, lining out at full-back in 1953 on the Rossa team that defeated Creggan to win the Minor Football Championship. He played alongside Terry Gibbons, his brother-in-law and former GAA columnist with the Andersonstown News.
Denis would win three football championships with Rossa during the 1950s, and remained deeply involved in club life following his retirement from playing. He worked in the bar in Rossa House and served as a member of the club committee.
Speaking on his passing, Rossa Chairperson Malachy Carabine said that Denis had a real understanding of what it took to build a club.
"Like so many of his generation, Denis understood that a club was built not only by what happened on the field, but by the people who gave their time to it year after year.
"That love of Rossa was passed down through the generations. His sons, Conor and the late Ronan, proudly represented the club in both hurling and football, while his grandsons Conor and Chris would also go on to represent Rossa at senior level. His granddaughter Orla also played for the club and she is the current PRO."
Denis remained an ardent supporter of Rossa in his later years, often found supporting the club during championship matches with his wife, Sheila. The pair also enjoyed many breaks to Donegal together.
Malachy added that Denis' connection with O’Donovan Rossa had lasted a lifetime and would continue through his family.
"His passing represents a sad loss to everyone at the club, but his contribution to Rossa, and the generations of his family who followed him into the blue and gold, ensure that his legacy will endure.
A true Rossa man and a true club stalwart."
Denis’ remains will be reposing in 6 Baronscourt Lane from Friday afternoon. Those wishing to pay their respects can do so on Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 12noon to 9pm.
Funeral mass will take place in St Michael’, Finaghy, on Monday at 10am, with burial to follow in Kincasslagh, County Donegal.
