On their way in Mary Lou McDonald said: "I think the message to everybody is that there are no second class citizens in this society. That every single person enjoys the same rights to live peacefully, to live in peace to have their rights vindicated and to have a right also to expect that their political leaders will stand with them when there is a threat to their safety and their peace of mind.
"That’s what we did.
"I think nothing less than that would have been expected from a First Minister and certainly nothing less than that would have been expected from the leadership of Sinn Féin.
"We made this decision to stand with the people with our eyes wide open. We took that decision consciously because it was the right thing to do and it was the right thing to do.”
Michelle O'Neill said: "I am proud of the decision that we took on the Garvaghy Road. That will never change.”
