THE number of students studying Irish in first year at Queen's University has risen by 133 per cent from last year.
Eighty-four students are studying Irish as either single-honours or as part of a joint-honours degree. This comes on the back of Queen's introducing new joint-honours options for Irish students including Law with Irish, Broadcast Production with Irish and Business with Irish.
Other options for joint honours include Irish and French, Irish and Portuguese, Irish and English, Irish and History, Irish and Politics, Irish and International Relations and Irish and Archaeology.
Speaking on the new intake, Head of Irish at Queen's University, Dr Marcas Mac Coinnigh, said there had been huge demand for their new courses.
"Myself and my colleagues are delighted about this hugely encouraging rise in intake. It demonstrates the dedication of our students to the language, and the fantastic work of the Cumann Gaelach over the past several years.
He continued, "We are dedicated to developing our courses even more in the years ahead."
