A BELFAST sandwich shop has been paid by Deliveroo after posting on their social media that American policy towards "anyone or thing associated with Cuba," was the cause of delayed payments over the past two months.
Cuban Sandwich Factory, with shops on Callender Street and Botanic Avenue posted on their social media pages on Tuesday evening saying they were suspending all orders from Deliveroo as they had not been receiving regular payments for almost two months.
However, they did not lay the blame on the food delivery app, but on the American bank which the app uses for payment.
"The bank they use for payment is an American bank, who because of Mr Trump are trying to make it very difficult for anyone or thing associated with Cuba.
"With no guarantee of any payment date or indeed ever being paid what has now run into several thousands, it is unsustainable for us to continue with Deliveroo. And if we continued, it could certainly result in the closure of Cuban Sandwich Factory for good."
The post was viewed and shared thousands of times on social media, and on Wednesday morning, the shop posted an update.
"We got paid! Thanks so much to the wonderful people of Belfast for your solidarity. Thanks to the journalists who listened to our story. Thanks to #deliveroo for putting pressure on Citibank.
"It’s amazing how quickly things can be resolved by people power but incredible that a sandwich shop in Belfast can be impacted by Mr Trump’s sanctions. Please keep the people of Cuba in your hearts and minds for their struggle with Trump’s actions is a much bigger one that can’t be so easily resolved by the power of social media."
