THERE were scenes of celebration at Whiterock Children's Centre on Tuesday afternoon as staff and service users came together to celebrate Centre Director Deirdre Walsh's 30 years of service.
For three decades Deirdre has been at the heart of the Whiterock community, supporting generations of children and families through her compassion, commitment and dedication.
Her work has had a profound and lasting impact, helping children thrive, strengthening families and making Whiterock Children's Centre a place of welcome, support and opportunity.
Deirdre is currently overseeing a new Whiterock Children's Centre with construction already underway, which will bring state-of-the-art facilities to the Whiterock Road.
On Tuesday, staff and service users came together for a surprise celebration for Deirdre at their temporary premises at St John's GAC.
Lord Mayor Róis-Máire Donnelly presented Deirdre with a Lord Mayor's certificate in recognition of her contribution to the city.
Speaking to the Andersonstown News, Deirdre said: "I can't believe I am here 30 years. So much has happened in that time. When I started, we were just one room in the college and now work has started on building a brand new state-of-the-art Whiterock Children's Centre.
"For me, the need in the community is much more than it was before and there is a real needs for services like ourselves. I am just one person in our team. The staff are wonderful and I couldn't do anything without them."
Chairperson Kate Lavery said: "We just wanted to recognise what Deirdre has done over 30 years of service for our children, young people, our families and our community.
"Deirdre has been such a strong voice and leader. It was a no brainer to celebrate 30 years of Deirdre at Whiterock Children's Centre. It has been a privilege to work alongside Deirdre."
West Belfast MP Paul Maskey also thanked Deirdre for her hard work over the last 30 years.
"No matter who you meet in West Belfast everyone knows Deirdre from Whiterock Children's Centre," he added. "Everyone knows the work that goes on here and without Deirdre's leadership I don't think half of what has been achieved could have been.
"I have no doubt Deirdre's efforts are so much appreciated, especially by the children and families that come through the doors here.
"West Belfast is a lot better, all because of the work done by Deirdre and her team at the centre.
"The old building is down and the new building is underway. It is very exciting times for everyone here at Whiterock Children's Centre."
