LONG-awaited resurfacing works in Twinbrook and Poleglass commenced last week following sustained lobbying by local representatives and concerns raised by residents.

The resurfacing programme in Glasvey Drive was completed by Friday, providing a much-needed upgrade to the road surface ahead of the new school year at Holy Evangelist Primary school.

Local representatives have been raising the condition of Glasvey Drive directly with the Department for Infrastructure, including through site visits and engagement with departmental officials, following concerns from local residents about the condition of the road.

Sinn Féin Councillor Séanna Walsh welcomed the completion of the works, saying the improvements would make a significant difference to people living in and travelling through the area.

“This is really welcome news, particularly with the new school year just around the corner," he said.

“Glasvey Drive is an important route through Twinbrook and the condition of the road has been an issue that residents have raised with us for some time. We have been consistently highlighting these concerns with the Department for Infrastructure and pushing for action.

“I am delighted to now see the resurfacing works underway. This will make a real difference for local residents, parents, school staff and everyone who uses this road on a daily basis.”

Councillor Caoimhín McCann who represents the Poleglass area also welcomed work beginning on the entrance to the Glenkeen area.

“I am glad to see work now underway at Glenkeen, this has been a big issue for local residents for some time," he said. "I am also working on bigger projects in the area such as Woodside that will involve a major works project.”

West Belfast MLA Danny Baker said Glasvey Drive and Glenkeen are two of a number of roads where local representatives were continuing to press for improvements.

“Glasvey Drive was an important area for us to secure resurfacing for, and I am pleased to see the work now completed," he said. "The entrance to the Glenkeen estate was also in serious disrepair and I am glad to see this work now underway.

“Residents have been raising concerns about the condition of these roads and we have been working with the Department for Infrastructure to make sure those concerns were properly addressed.

“This is another positive step towards improving the road infrastructure across the Colin area, but there is still a significant amount of work to do.

“We are continuing to lobby for further investment in Twinbrook, including areas such as Aspen, as well as roads in Lagmore and Poleglass. Larger areas, including Woodside, also require a resurfacing programme.

“We will continue to work with the Department for Infrastructure and push for the investment needed to improve road surfaces across Colin.”
