CONCERNS have been raised about road safety around the one-way system in Cavendish Street in the Beechmount area of West Belfast.
Residents have complained about the poor condition of road markings and signage which is meant to make drivers aware of the one-way system.
As part of this work, the Beechmount Residents' Collective has been campaigning for faded road markings and signage on Cavendish Street and Islandbawn Street to be renewed and improved, helping to make the existing one-way systems clearer to motorists and other road users.
Residents have raised concerns that faded markings and a lack of clear signage is leading to confusion, particularly for drivers who may not realise that the streets operate as one-way systems.
There have been reports of vehicles travelling the wrong way along the streets, creating an unnecessary risk to pedestrians, residents and other road users. Concerns have also been raised about vehicles travelling at excessive speeds, increasing the potential risk of collisions and serious incidents.
Seán Doherty from the Beechmount Residents' Collective said: “We believe that clear road markings and appropriate signage are important in helping drivers understand how the roads should be used.
"Where markings have faded or signage is unclear there is a greater potential for confusion and for vehicles to travel the wrong way.
“We hope this work will help protect lives, improve road safety and reduce the risk of serious incidents or collisions in the area. Residents are concerned there is going to be a serious accident.
"Beechmount Residents' Collective will continue to work alongside local residents and engage with the Department for Infrastructure and the relevant agencies to push for these improvements.
"Our priority remains straightforward: Safer roads, clearer signage and a safer environment for everyone living in and travelling through our community.
"We thank local residents for continuing to bring issues to our attention and for working with us to improve road safety and reduce the risk of anyone getting hurt."
