IF you fancy yourself as the next JK Rowling or George RR Martin, Falls Road Library will be your next port of call from this weekend, as a free series of creative writing workshops is set to get under way.

The classes will be steered by published science fiction author Laurence Donaghy, who penned the successful Belfast set Folk’d trilogy, and will take place from 10am to 1pm.

Laurence told Daily Belfast that he was “thrilled” to partner with the library to encourage budding writers.

“I've been to writing workshops in the past and they've been very formal and frankly a bit stiff,” he said. “I asked Andrew, the manager of the Falls Road Library, if he might be interested in trying out a more relaxed type of writing class, for people of all abilities, for those who think they might want to pursue getting published, or for people who just want to have a bit of fun and express themselves. He thought it was a great idea and he's been terrific in offering the Library as a venue. I can't wait to get started.”

Falls Library Manager Andrew Lawther is encouraging anyone with a creative writing interest to come along.

“I’ve been trying my hand at writing myself off and on for years now and the biggest problem I have is trying to find the time,” he said. “Coming along to a workshop like this is fantastic because it teaches you discipline and gets you motivated to write. This is a great opportunity to come and work with a local author and get hints and tips, not just on writing, but also on making your writing marketable and potentially even getting published. Plus, you're guaranteed to meet new people and hear some great stories.”

All are welcome to the creative writing workshops taking place from 10am to 1pm from this Saturday, October 15.
