WELL-KNOWN Belfast republican Martin McCartney has died. Marty, as he was known to friends, was highly respected throughout the district, but particularly among the republican family, having spent two terms in prison – one in the early 1970s and the other in the early 1990s.
Marty was an active IRA volunteer for over 30 years, taking part in many actions against the British Army and the RUC.
Friend and comrade, Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann, said Martin loved his community and had a special place in his heart for all those who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of Irish freedom.
“I was deeply sad when I heard of Marty's passing and I offer deepest sympathies to his sons and daughters, they have lost a father and we have all lost a friend,” said Fra. “I have known Marty a lifetime and I am a better person for having had him as a friend. I know that sentiment will be felt widely amongst the republican family throughout Ireland.
“It is amazing speaking to people since his death and seeing how many were touched by his presence and the stories they told of their coming into contact with him. He always spoke his mind when the occasion required and was proud of his time in the republican struggle and the friendships he made. I always admired the depth of his of his commitment and dedication.”
Martin McCartney is being waked at his daughter’s home in Rodney Parade. His remains will leave the house on Saturday morning following a service there, stopping briefly at the Garden of Remembrance on the Donegall Road before moving on to Roselawn Crematorium.
