WORK is commencing on renovations around the Ormeau Park Bandstand, following delays due to additional work being needed than was initially expected.
The bandstand, constructed in 1900 is a Grade B1 listed heritage site and sits near the original park gates.
Work includes the replacement of the damaged metal sheeting in the roof, as well as treatment of inorganic growth, and the removal of rust from the cast iron columns. The stand will also be repainted and the timber fascia replaced, with the concrete base also being washed, mortar re-pointed and downpipes being installed.
Gary McKeown, SDLP Councillor for Botanic, said: "I'm delighted that after years of working to secure it, the bandstand in Ormeau Park is being renovated, as it was in an awful state. The project has been conservation-led, using specialised materials, and there was also more work required than had originally been anticipated, so unfortunately it has taken longer than expected and was closed for the summer, but it's important that it's done right."
He continued, "This programme of restoration will help protect the bandstand for years to come, and also provides the basis for further upgrades when funding becomes available."
