THE Columba Club in Coatbridge provided a fitting venue on Saturday, 1 August, for the launch of Jim McVeigh's latest book, Our Martin – a detailed and engaging account of the life of Martin McGuinness.
McVeigh traces McGuinness's journey from his youth in Derry's Bogside during the 1960s, through his involvement with the IRA, to his emergence as Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. The book charts his rapid rise within Sinn Féin and examines his central role in the peace process, including negotiations with the British government aimed at ending the conflict.
Richly illustrated with historical photographs, Our Martin places many defining moments of the Troubles into context. Iconic images, including the well-known photograph of McGuinness holding a handgun, are accompanied by informed analysis of republican strategy, particularly the movement's shift towards electoral politics following the 1981 Hunger Strikes.
McVeigh presents McGuinness as a determined political leader whose quiet charisma, courage, and commitment to his family remained constant throughout his public life.
During an informative question-and-answer session, the author demonstrated an impressive depth of knowledge, drawing on personal acquaintance with McGuinness, extensive research, and a strong grasp of Irish history and contemporary political debate, including discussion of a future border poll on Irish reunification.
Both informative and thought-provoking, Our Martin offers readers an insightful portrait of one of the most significant figures in modern Irish politics and is recommended to anyone interested in the history of the Troubles and the peace process.
