The West Belfast author who co-wrote the runaway success A Night With George says her new play is even better than the award-winning comedy.
Brenda Murphy was speaking during a break in rehearsals in the Cultúrlann theatre for Baby It’s Cold Outside, her new comedy, filled, as she says with “black humour”.
The play debuted in the Roddy McCorley club on the Glen Road back in November to rave reviews and is back for a three-night Féile run at the Falls Road theatre.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever written,” said Brenda. “It’s even better than George. It’s everything you wanted to know about lesbians but were afraid to ask. Those things will be answered during the night of the play.
“It’s all tongue in cheek black humour.”
Starring a West Belfast cast of Kevin Elliott, Nichole Murphy, Fiona Hall and Sarah Wilson, the play takes place during a storm when Kevin Elliott’s character is “trapped with three lesbians with one about to give birth” during the big freeze.
“Basically I’m in love with the character played by Nichole,” said Kevin. “But she’s a lesbian and I’ve donated sperm so she can have a baby. It’s very funny. The cleaners in the Cultúrlann who have seen rehearsals are calling me the Sperminator.”
Nichole says the West Belfast audience will love the play.
“During rehearsals I still find the lines funny, even though I have maybe read them a hundred times,” she said.
Such was the reaction when the play was first performed last year that one of the members of the audience is taking the cast and the play to the Channel Islands where it will be staged at the Grand Hotel in Jersey.
“If there’s only one thing you can make it to during this year’s Féile events, then make it this play,” said Brenda.
