The true meaning of Christmas is to be seen in West Belfast this week when we witness how the community has rallied round the family of Eileen Wilson after their home was gutted in a blaze on Christmas Day.

Eileen must have thought her world had fallen apart when she saw the aftermath of the fire and realised that she had lost her every possession.

But when she was at her lowest her neighbours came to her aid. The people of West Belfast – and further afield – arrived in their droves carrying toys, household appliances, furniture and money, while a local businessman has found the family somewhere to live until their home is ready for occupation again.

From such a Christmas tragedy an inspiring story has developed that has made us all recall the true meaning of Christmas – which is about helping those in need.

Let us take that spirit into 2012, make sure no-one is left behind and that we as a community come out the other end of the New Year stronger and together.
