THERE have been calls for more to be done to secure the safety of children and families using Colin Glen Forest Park after a young cyclist was attacked by a gang.
The 15-year-old boy was set upon by a group of five youths as he cycled through the park on Monday evening at around 6pm. The victim was pulled from his bicycle and punched to the ground where he was kicked a number of times. He was left with bruising to the face from the attack.
Local Sinn Féin Councillor Stephen Magennis condemned the attack and called for police in Lisburn and nearby Woodbourne barracks to do more to secure Colin Glen forest, particularly over the summer months.
“At this time of year when more and more families are using the park for recreation well into the evening, more needs to be done to ensure that they can enjoy this space without fear of assault,” said Councillor Magennis.
“Colin Glen Forest Park is in the shadow of Woodbourne PSNI barracks, yet too many incidents have taken place both inside and around this park in recent years. I would appeal for anyone with information on this attack to come forward and I hope the young lad makes a full recovery.”
Police in Lisburn investigating the assault say they would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who thinks they can help identify those involved. Anyone with information is asked to call 0845 600 8000.
