ST Gerard's School have paid tribute to their former principal who died on St Stephen's Day after a short illness.
Siobhan McAlinden was principal at the school between 2004 and 2016 where she oversaw a number of changes at the school including a move from their site on the Springfield Road to a new school at the former Balmoral High School site on Blacks Road.
"It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Siobhan McAlinden, former Principal of St Gerard’s, who passed away on December 26 after a short illness," St Gerard's said in a statement.
"Siobhan served the school community in St Gerard’s from 2004-2016 with unwavering dedication, passion and a commitment to the success and well-being of every student and staff member.
"Siobhan was a dedicated and compassionate leader whose unwavering commitment to the education and well-being of students with special needs touched the lives of many.
"Throughout her tenure, Siobhan was an advocate for the most vulnerable children creating an environment where students thrived.
"She will be remembered for her leadership and also for her kindness, integrity, and the lasting impact she had on the lives of all those fortunate enough to work with her."
A funeral notice describes Siobhan as a "loving mother of Aoife, Deirdre and Aidan. Mother-in-law to Marián and Amber. Cherished grandmother of Darragh, Cathal Conor, Cormac Maebh, Éabha and Luka and much-loved sister of Denis, Orla and Rory."
Her Requiem Mass took place on Tuesday at 9:30 am in Saint Patrick’s Church, Downpatrick.
